*Please forward to your list: Voice and Recommendation (November 8, 2006) We, the elected Unity Council of the African Community Centers for Unity and Self-Determination/Atlanta, support the LAUNCH OF THE HAPPY BIRTHDAY ASSATA CAMPAIGN, designed to secure a pardon for Assata Shakur by her 60th Birthday on July 16, 2007 by the HANDS OFF ASSATA CAMPAIGN. We view this initiative as positive for our community and our people for the following reasons: This campaign is to wish Assata peace, justice, and the freedom she deserves and has fought for for so long; This campaign also calls for an end to the repressive targeting of Assata, communities of color, poor communities and also calls for the recognition and release of political prisoners and prisoners of war held in the United States; This campaign will also necessarily denounce the encouragement of international espionage against the sovereign nation of Cuba, and demand an end to the blockade of Cuba We, the elected Unity Council of the African Community Centers for Unity and Self-Determination/Atlanta recommend and strongly encourage that you as an individual or organization do the following in support of the initiative of the HANDS OFF ASSATA CAMPAIGN: Acknowledge and Observe the date of November 2, the 27th Anniversary of Assata's Liberation from Prison as a Resistance Date, worthy of remembrance and honor; Donate to the Happy Birthday Campaign. Continuous support is vital to Campaign organizing.
