“Functional Unity is that level and quality of social organization that naturally aids members of a social group in building power to control the economic, political and cultural life of their community. Further, Functional Unity is a permanent (intergenerational) system and infrastructure through which the community promotes and protects its vital interest.” More than anything else, we (Black Community) suffer from a lack (or low level) of Functional Unity based on the above explanation. Our oppressors are not the major problem; rather it is the quality of our response to oppression and our capacity to prevail irrespective of the challenge. So, how do we build and maintain Functional Unity (the missing element) and make it a permanent (intergenerational) part of the life of our community? *We do so by first constructing, and then maintaining the necessary tool and institution for this specific purpose in our communities and among our people. No matter how badly we want and need Functional Unity for our people, Functional Unity can only come into being and grow through first the creation and then the proper use or application of a sufficient tool or social device designed and dedicated for this specific purpose. Once this tool is solidly in place, we will naturally begin to organize ourselves and build the necessary relationships required to harness and direct our human and material resources for collective empowerment and victory over oppression. For us, this necessary and proper tool or social device (institution) is the African Community Centers for Unity and Self-Determination. This institution is currently being built and perfected as a prototype in Atlanta, GA USA. The master plan calls for the duplication of these Centers in cities and towns throughout the U.S. and beyond. The details of this ambitious, but absolutely necessary endeavour, are outlined in an organized presentation called the "Blueprint for Functional Unity".
